With the ability to create players and customize clubs, and the engrossing master-league function, there’s a lot to keep a player coming back.
But note that none of those things actually relate to the gameplay. There are huge flaws in the game which will hamper the fun-factor once you get to be better than average at the game. First, shot power and shot accuracy have very little to do with how often a player scores. My power, accuracy forwards regularly miss the goal from ten yards out. Honestly, I could go into my backyard and kick more accurately than that, yet the game seems to think it’s perfectly realistic.
As another review has mentioned, the way the game auto-changes your player on the defense is nothing short of pure stupidity. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been lining up a beautiful defensive stop, go in to slide for the tackle when abruptly the game changes me to another defenseman, who executes the slide-tackle from behind and draws a red card. It’s impossible to coordinate a coherent defense under any circumstances.
All in all, what kills the game is randomness. In two championship matches against Trad Bricks, one of the better teams on the game, I scored eleven goals and allowed one. In the very next game, against a team that was in the bottom half of the division, I couldn’t score a single goal!
As another review also mentioned, the game is flawed in how it handles loose balls as well. If there is a loose ball near the goal line whether I’m attacking or defending , all of my players will gawk at it, as if they’ve never seen a football before in their lives. But if a shot ricochets off the goalkeeper and is heading out of bounds so that I’ll get a corner kick, my players will run toward it as if their life depends on it, firmly booting the ball out of bounds and giving the opponents a free kick instead.
I imagine that WE8 is better in terms of AI, but 7 is horribly deficient. That said, the game was incredibly fun for me up until I reached the skill level where the flaws began to bother me.
I still get a kick out of having my own personal club on the game, and plowing through Master League mode to win championships. But with as much fun as the game brings me, it brings just as much anger and frustration when players inexplicably miss wide-open nets, auto-change to a defender nowhere near the player with the ball, or pass the ball directly to the other team.
Buy it, by all means, and have fun with it for a while. Just be ready to move on when it starts to bother you. This is the universal PS2 game that everyone who loves soccer plays and a really good dream team effort from Konami I placed this order a few days ago to coincide with the release date on March 16, only to be pushed back to April 6 next month. A few teams, such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Celtic and Real Madrid are fully licensed, with real team strips, badges and players, but the majority are in likeness only. The quality of the emblems and kits varies from club to club and player names use the usual misspelling trick that makes them recognizable, but not percent accurate.
Suffice to say, if you want every last detail to be accurate, Pro Evo isn’t for you. Commentary still fails to match the authenticity of the visuals, often lagging behind play or totally misreading the situation.

While Pro Evo is always best played against a real-life opponent, Master League returns and is as in-depth as ever. With the new stricter refereeing style with regards to pressuring the player with the ball and what seems to be an increased overall difficulty, playing in the Master League is tough from 3 stars and up. In the first five or so games against the AI you’ll really struggle to score goals, but practice does bring dividends, which is how a challenging sports game should be.

Minor changes have also been made to set-pieces. Throw-ins are now as they were in Pro Evo 3, which gives you more options, and free-kicks now let you play a measured short ball, using a power meter, as well as the standard lofted delivery.
Scoring from crosses and corners also seems tougher than before, but seeing as may people built their entire attack around this in Pro Evo 4, the change is no bad thing. A few teams, such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Celtic and Real Madrid are fully licensed, with real team strips, badges and players, but the majority are in likeness only.
The quality of the emblems and kits varies from club to club and player names use the usual misspelling trick that makes them recognizable, but not percent accurate. Suffice to say, if you want every last detail to be accurate, Pro Evo isn’t for you. In two championship matches against Trad Bricks, one of the better teams on the game, I scored eleven goals and allowed one. In the very next game, against a team that was in the bottom half of the division, I couldn’t score a single goal! As another review also mentioned, the game is flawed in how it handles loose balls as well.
If there is a loose ball near the goal line whether I’m attacking or defending , all of my players will gawk at it, as if they’ve never seen a football before in their lives. But if a shot ricochets off the goalkeeper and is heading out of bounds so that I’ll get a corner kick, my players will run toward it as if their life depends on it, firmly booting the ball out of bounds and giving the opponents a free kick instead.
I imagine that WE8 is better in terms of AI, but 7 is horribly deficient. That said, the game was incredibly fun for me up until I reached the skill level where the flaws began to bother me. I still get a kick out of having my own personal club on the game, and plowing through Master League mode to win championships. But with as much fun as the game brings me, it brings just as much anger and frustration when players inexplicably miss wide-open nets, auto-change to a defender nowhere near the player with the ball, or pass the ball directly to the other team.

The first touch system allows you to take the ball with more control than in previous games, and now only the very best players can get past defenders. Pro Evo 4 allowed attackers to dribble past defenders far too frequently, and this change makes the game all the better. The side-step has also been moved solely to the d-pad, and no longer needs to be used in conjunction with a shoulder button.
To revert back to traditional control when on the ball you have to hold the R2 button or controller equivalent. This, along with numerous other small changes, takes some getting used to. Shooting also feels improved over last year, with a more significant gap between skill levels and more control to the human player.
Skilled players now have a ‚Middle shoot‘ stat that allows them to rifle in bullets from just outside the penalty box, and a new ‚placed‘ shot lets you direct your efforts with a little more accuracy. There’s a definite advantage to getting skilled players on the ball in attacking positions, and this leads to more measured and planned attacks. Minor changes have also been made to set-pieces.
Throw-ins are now as they were in Pro Evo 3, which gives you more options, and free-kicks now let you play a measured short ball, using a power meter, as well as the standard lofted delivery.
Scoring from crosses and corners also seems tougher than before, but seeing as may people built their entire attack around this in Pro Evo 4, the change is no bad thing.
