Denzel Washington Lincoln learns how Angelina Jolie Amelia handled the 1st murder and request that she be in on the investigation. Amelia was a beat cop and finally got the assignment she wanted which was working with the youth, but she is pulled out and sent to Lincoln’s house He’s a parapalegic which you will find out why at the very beginning of the movie, so it’s not a spoiler alert.
Amelia does not hit it off with Lincoln the 1st time they meet, especially when she finds out why she is there. She really resents him. He comes across as arogant, full of him self and entitled to whatever he wants because of his condition. This really makes Amelia mad and she lets him know it. Lincoln feels differently, he feels she is exactly the right person because she has a strong instinct for clues etc. When she is ordered to help with the investigation, the longer Lincoln and Amelia work together on this case the closer they become and she realizes she was wrong about him.
Together they work the case closely, time is running out. It has a wonderful cast, including Queen Latifah who is always in character. Even though I know how it turns out I could watch this movie over and over.

A good procedural crime thriller with the emphasis on procedural – too many references to somewhat arcane SCO work without enough explanation dilute the tension being built up in the serial killer parts – but it is the first in a series so things may improve The film is a help, though Rhymes is far more likeable through being played by Denzel A good start – I hope! Even though I’d seen the film which seems to have followed the book very closely, I enjoyed this more than I expected, and, though I thought I’d remembered the ending, I hadn’t!
In parts there is a little too much forensic detail and technical information but I coped by glancing over it to get back to the story. It’s a different take on the usual detective novel and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, who were well drawn. The fact that Rhyme is crippled and can only move his head and one finger, and needs everything doing for him, down to the most basic bodily functions, is dealt with in a matter-of-fact, non-pitying way, and does not become ‚ the story‘, a quadriplegic is what he is, not who he is and it is simply part of the tapestry of the story.
His descriptive powers are amazing and the tension is palpable throughout. Deaver crafts intriguing characters trying to stay one step ahead at all times.
It continually draws you in. I enjoyed the movie years ago and just happened upon these books – Very glad I did. Great read. Good intro to the series. Starts off with some quite technical terms to get you into the lingo and, to be honest, it just went staight over my head , but once the story beds in it becomes a good read.
The characters are competant, clever and well thought out. The plot is easy to follow but also interesting. The subplots weave well into the main plot.

The killer surgically removes a piece of bone from the student, leaving an open wound that attracts nearby rats. Amelia and Rhyme, again using the clues left by the killer at the scene of the previous murder, find the victim’s body which has been mutilated by rats.
Amelia finds another scrap of paper and a piece of bone. The pressure of the tense investigation and bureaucratic challenges to Amelia and Rhyme’s involvement in the case begin to have serious impacts on Rhyme’s health and stability. Thelma, Rhyme’s personal carer and nurse, reveals to Amelia that he intends to euthanise himself out of fear of seizures that could leave him in a vegetative state. After piecing together the message the killer was sending using the scrap paper left at each scene, Amelia and Rhyme are led to an old crime novel called The Bone Collector , where it is revealed the killer is replicating the crimes from the fictional story.
This leads them to the killer’s next victims, a grandfather and granddaughter who have been tied to a pier during a rise in tide.
The paramedics successfully resuscitate the young girl, but the grandfather is pronounced dead. At the scene, Amelia finds another piece of bone, part of an old police badge, and a subway map. These clues together with the asbestos left by the killer at the scene of Lindsay’s death lead Amelia to an abandoned subway station, where she sees numbers on the side of a carriage that have been tampered with to spell out Rhyme’s police badge number. The killer is revealed to be Richard Thompson, the medical technician in charge of Rhyme’s medical equipment.
Richard’s real name is Marcus Andrews, a former forensics expert, who was convicted after Rhyme wrote an article accusing him of planting evidence resulting in the wrongful imprisonment of six innocent people, one of whom hanged himself. Blaming Rhyme for his imprisonment and the abuse he endured during his incarceration, he attempts to kill Rhyme out of revenge. Rhyme retaliates by crushing Marcus‘ hand in his medical bed, resulting in a struggle between the two that forces them both onto the floor.
Unable to move, Rhyme is almost killed by Marcus until Amelia arrives and shoots Marcus dead. The following Christmas , Rhyme, having abandoned his plans to commit suicide, meets his sister and niece coming to visit him along with Amelia and his other colleagues.

Primarily because all the core cast members from Denzel to Luis have that illusive chemistry. This is one of the few movies to me that did not have a slow moment where as a viewer I’m anxious for the scene to move forward.
Not once. Wish this cast made more films together. A serial killer is in New York City leaving behind a series of bodies and clues and Donaghy is given the case and acts as the eyes and ears for Rhyme out in the field. The story lays out a real mystery which draws in the audience. He also plays the mater detective able to see things and put them together that others miss. I love all things Denzel!

Angelina Jolie was in her prime and she uses a convincing New York accent, although she does seem to pause at odd moments, like she’s figuring out what to do next. He alone can see the potential in a rookie cop [Angelina] and he is allowed to use her to investigate a series of murders whilst he maintains control via modern day electronics. They must pay police officers an awful lot in the US. The murder scenes are realistically grisly but the roles of Denzel and Angelina and the way the rest of the police force fawn over them made me press the eject button before seeing all the film.
As always the book far exceeds the movie. In the movie most of the story that Deavers penned has been omitted thus making this a fairly short film.
If you read the novel you will see that during the first 24 hours of the plot at least 3 more murders are committed by the Bone Collectors. The collector abducts a young mother and her daughter and keeps them in a gringy basement building, but the police women working with Rimes is able to solve the clues and save them.
The old man that the collector shoves into a pipe that is slowly filling up with sea water as the tide rises is also rescued just in time, but this is missed out in the film. As is the young boy that is held by the BC in the basement of his safe house and has been left to be eaten by a pack of wild abandoned dogs by the heroine and the NYPD ESU. In the book the story is also linked to a possible terrorist attack on a UN conference and the eventual perpetrator of this attack is the young mother that they rescued from the collector.
This movie detracts from teh book in a zillion ways, even down to the finer details. In the book his nurse and therapist is a man named Thom, but in the movie it is a woman.

Amelia was a beat cop and finally got the assignment she wanted which was working with the youth, but she is pulled out and sent to Lincoln’s house He’s a parapalegic which you will find out why at the very beginning of the movie, so it’s not a spoiler alert. Amelia does not hit it off with Lincoln the 1st time they meet, especially when she finds out why she is there.
She really resents him. He comes across as arogant, full of him self and entitled to whatever he wants because of his condition. This really makes Amelia mad and she lets him know it. Lincoln feels differently, he feels she is exactly the right person because she has a strong instinct for clues etc. When she is ordered to help with the investigation, the longer Lincoln and Amelia work together on this case the closer they become and she realizes she was wrong about him. Together they work the case closely, time is running out.
It has a wonderful cast, including Queen Latifah who is always in character. Even though I know how it turns out I could watch this movie over and over. You will not be disappointed. Deaver A Maiden’s Grave is too fond of gimmicks. They range in this novel from the extreme his detective here, Lincoln Rhyme, is a quadriplegic who can move only one finger to the moderately eccentric beautiful policewoman Amelia Sachs, who acts as Rhyme’s arms and legs, suffers from arthritis. And his villain, a serial killer who models his crimes on ones he finds in a book on criminal life in old New York, has an uncomfortable way of slaying each of his victims in ways guaranteed to stop the heart or turn the stomach: buried alive, flayed by high-pressure steam, eaten by hungry rats, burned alive, attacked by mad dogs.
All this takes place in the course of one busy New York weekend as the killer helpfully leaves playful little clues as to where he’s going to strike next and Rhyme uses his immense savvy and a battery of computerized testing tools to figure it out.
The whole affair, in fact, is incredibly silly, though the headlong narrative, with Sachs arriving in the nick of time driving at 80 mph through New York streets to perform rescues that seem to belong in a comic strip rather than a novel, never lets up, and there is plenty of genuine forensic knowledge in evidence.
There are dramatic switcheroos up to the very last page, and a climactic battle to the death that might make even teenage boys wince. For it seems to be at that kind of readership–uncritical and doting on violence–that the novel is aimed. I certainly liked this book. It is my first but not my last to read in this series. I gave it a 4 star rating, to leave some room for any coming improvement. Excellent read. Brilliant and riveting. I was left wanting more. On to the next book.

The scenarios, explanations, dialogue, characters, and everything else involved in the story are absolutely and ridiculously unbelievable. I mean, they are DUMB! I can’t believe there were so many positive reviews of this drivel.
Lincoln Rhyme is supposed to be a curmudgeon, I get it, but he comes across as simply unlikeable just for kicks, I might go back into the text and count how many times he „barks“ his responses to people. Couple the distasteful main character with the fact that he annoyingly has a pat and ready answer for absolutely every piece of evidence that is presented to him and the result is a farce.
I finished the book because I wanted to see if it would get better This would have been a one-star review, but I gave it a second star for finally coming to an end. Lincoln Rhyme is a very intriguing character in his own right. Amelia Sachs is a great cop in her own right and it took the meeting of a lifetime with Rhyme to challenge her mindset and infuse confidence in her abilities to round out her ego so she can symbolically and literally drive faster.
I’m looking forward to completing the rest of the series. The rest of the characters on the team are just as memorable because they all have issues of some kind that compliment and each other. Who doesn’t love Thom! I totally loved the movie but the book is in my opinion worthy of binge reading the collection. One person found this helpful.
They are immortal now. I freed them. I took them down to the bone. I read this book for the first time when it first came out back in I loved it from the beginning and read the entire Lincoln Rhyme series after that. And as I remember this movie followed the book pretty closely. It seemed like there are a bunch of discrepancies from the book and I re-read it just to refresh my memory.
The TV show is okay but it barely follows the book and, in comparison, definitely makes the movie shine. Lincoln Rhyme was a criminalist with the New York Police Department until he was injured on the job and became a quadriplegic. He’s having a difficult time finding the desire to live when abruptly he is called upon to consult on an unusual case.
He brings in Officer Amelia Sachs to be „his feet“ at the crime scenes. I loved the storyline. I loved the characters especially Lincoln, Amelia, and his health aide Thom. If you haven’t read this book and this series, you are genuinely missing out on one of the best police procedurals out there.
The Bone Collector was a fast-paced, can’t put down read that kept me reading well into the night!! I can’t wait to read the next book! Give it a view! See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Once again I have been duped by the good reviews for a film. Denzel plays a quadraplegic who is allowed to continue investigating murders even though he is bed ridden.
He alone can see the potential in a rookie cop [Angelina] and he is allowed to use her to investigate a series of murders whilst he maintains control via modern day electronics. They must pay police officers an awful lot in the US. The murder scenes are realistically grisly but the roles of Denzel and Angelina and the way the rest of the police force fawn over them made me press the eject button before seeing all the film. As always the book far exceeds the movie.
In the movie most of the story that Deavers penned has been omitted thus making this a fairly short film. If you read the novel you will see that during the first 24 hours of the plot at least 3 more murders are committed by the Bone Collectors. The collector abducts a young mother and her daughter and keeps them in a gringy basement building, but the police women working with Rimes is able to solve the clues and save them.
The old man that the collector shoves into a pipe that is slowly filling up with sea water as the tide rises is also rescued just in time, but this is missed out in the film. As is the young boy that is held by the BC in the basement of his safe house and has been left to be eaten by a pack of wild abandoned dogs by the heroine and the NYPD ESU.
In the book the story is also linked to a possible terrorist attack on a UN conference and the eventual perpetrator of this attack is the young mother that they rescued from the collector. This movie detracts from teh book in a zillion ways, even down to the finer details. In the book his nurse and therapist is a man named Thom, but in the movie it is a woman. I bought the dvd after reading the book on vacation, but was sadly disappointed.
I appreciate that to have made the movie as the book reads would have meant a much bigger budget and therefore a bigger gamble, but to catch the essence of this excellent piece of writing by Deavers would more than likely been a box office hit. The DVD was new and in wrapper, quality is great. Waited quite some time for delivery though. One person found this helpful. The sound quality was abominable even with headphones and when I put on the subtitles to try not to miss half the dialogue, they were even worse!

This book was a definite page turner from start to finish, and it was non stop action with nothing but surprises along the way! Highly recommend!!! Well written, with lots of twists and turns.

A killer stalks the streets of New York City. He is kidnapping his victims and planning horrific deaths for them. He compounds his intentions by leaving the police clues at each scene of his next intended murder.
It is a constant race against time and the police appear to be losing. The authorities turn to Rhyme but is he in a fit state to cope with demands of a serial killer investigation. In addition to the search for the killer there are several sub-plots continuing throughout the story. The on-going United Nations conference that New York is currently hosting. Deaver writes well in my view and in addition to his description of the physical limitations a quadriplegic such as Rhyme experiences he also shows a good insight into the emotional and mental health aspects of such a condition.
Deaver does not spare his readers the realities of such an existence. Well worth a look. A good procedural crime thriller with the emphasis on procedural – too many references to somewhat arcane SCO work without enough explanation dilute the tension being built up in the serial killer parts – but it is the first in a series so things may improve The film is a help, though Rhymes is far more likeable through being played by Denzel A good start – I hope!
Even though I’d seen the film which seems to have followed the book very closely, I enjoyed this more than I expected, and, though I thought I’d remembered the ending, I hadn’t! In parts there is a little too much forensic detail and technical information but I coped by glancing over it to get back to the story. It’s a different take on the usual detective novel and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, who were well drawn.
The fact that Rhyme is crippled and can only move his head and one finger, and needs everything doing for him, down to the most basic bodily functions, is dealt with in a matter-of-fact, non-pitying way, and does not become ‚ the story‘, a quadriplegic is what he is, not who he is and it is simply part of the tapestry of the story.
His descriptive powers are amazing and the tension is palpable throughout. Deaver crafts intriguing characters trying to stay one step ahead at all times. It continually draws you in. I enjoyed the movie years ago and just happened upon these books – Very glad I did. Great read. Good intro to the series. Starts off with some quite technical terms to get you into the lingo and, to be honest, it just went staight over my head , but once the story beds in it becomes a good read.

Those who have read the book tear it apart because it is not exactly like the book and I don’t think that is fair. I loved the movie when it came out and I loved it again today, many years after the first watch.
Angelina Jolie was in her prime and she uses a convincing New York accent, although she does seem to pause at odd moments, like she’s figuring out what to do next. Denzel Washington is perfect as the handicapped crime fighter, who assists the cops in solving some of the more complicated crimes from his home, complete with some digital assistance, though rudimentary by today’s standards. Queen Latifah very competently plays Denzel’s home-care assistant, although this role is a departure from the book and seems to be a big sticking point according to the literary crowd.
If you are interested in crime stories, or have an interest in New York history, it’s an „A“ movie for certain and holds up to today’s standards for the most part. My only complaint was how some of the outdoor daylight scenes appeared to be shot on the wrong type of film, or blue-matte filtered way too much and too dark, but The Bone Collector easily remains on my Top list.

A villain escaping unveiling so close to the movie’s end while captivating and crossing moral boundaries leads to the most inconceivable suspect. The nefarious nature of the perpetrator’s crimes is well hidden by a usually respectable and community serving profession.
NOT for the fainthearted due to superb graphic representation of true crime’s garish nature! Excellent performances bring to life the thrilling cliffhanger, in The Bone Collector! Great acting, of course. Gory, so don’t watch it with small children or even adolescents, but it’s one of those „righteousness triumphs“ movies. Edge of your seat with a „I didn’t see that coming“ throughout most of the movie.
I love movies where I’m trying to figure out what’s happening before they have to explain it to me. I didn’t score very high at all on this one. I am blaming Denzel — he can take a little criticism now and then. You look like a very handsome young man again, having lost all that weight about 30 lbs.?

Denzel Washington Lincoln learns how Angelina Jolie Amelia handled the 1st murder and request that she be in on the investigation. Amelia was a beat cop and finally got the assignment she wanted which was working with the youth, but she is pulled out and sent to Lincoln’s house He’s a parapalegic which you will find out why at the very beginning of the movie, so it’s not a spoiler alert.
Amelia does not hit it off with Lincoln the 1st time they meet, especially when she finds out why she is there. She really resents him. He comes across as arogant, full of him self and entitled to whatever he wants because of his condition. This really makes Amelia mad and she lets him know it. Lincoln feels differently, he feels she is exactly the right person because she has a strong instinct for clues etc.
When she is ordered to help with the investigation, the longer Lincoln and Amelia work together on this case the closer they become and she realizes she was wrong about him. Together they work the case closely, time is running out. It has a wonderful cast, including Queen Latifah who is always in character.
Even though I know how it turns out I could watch this movie over and over. You will not be disappointed.
