Yes it is a real update. Office Starter is not part of windows so updates will not appear in Windows Update. Also why there is not a check for updates button on the starter software. Had the same question about the update.

Did you download it? That is, until the past several days. Today, after getting sick of the very persistent pop-ups, I finally went into Word and clicked File, Help, and then did the update from that location, thinking it would be safer than clicking on the pop-up. For us, this hasn’t worked and the „update“ has taken about 5 hours thus far. It never finishes!! Eventually, Word or Excel will open, but it has closed itself several times with „not responding“ messages or is very slow. I get a pop up at the bottom of the screen saying:.
